    As a high school choir, we’d send a scout to check the girls’ restroom and bring the whole choir in for the acoustics. But public restrooms don’t hold a candle up to traditional church buildings.

    Tenebrae means darkness, so maybe the sudden lying down represented sleep in the night while God watches over? Either that or the last line roughly translates from Latin to “Simon says everybody drop.”

    • Traditionally, this service was performed at night, and by candlelight. As the service proceeded, the candles would be extinguished, one by one, until finally the entire room was in darkness. I attended one of these services a few years ago in New York. I never imagined I have such an opportunity. But I saw one announced in the paper, and off I went.
