“Your Life’s Waiting Like A Goddamn Fool … Right Here”

  1. I’m a big fan of how she incorporates spoken word with traditional singing. It’s a performance, but it’s also a conversation at the same time. It makes it a more personal experience overall.

The message is spot on too. Stop searching for a life to live because you’ve got one right in front of you already. That’s what I took away from it.

    • There’s a lot to get out of Janis. She’s an inexhaustible resource, after all this time. I think Artaud would have been struck by the completely uninhibited physicality of her performances. He’d probably also admire her determination to take singing places it was ‘never intended to go’, even if that meant the utter destruction of her own voice. Well, we all know how that turned out.

  2. Ethan Looney says:

She is SO bad ass. 3:02 and 5:07, yeah she kills her own voice with that rasp, but she has the perfect amount of imperfection, and somehow her tone in a lower register is smooth as hell, she’s a wildly good vocalist. This also has to be one of the most legendary performances ever, right? Her emotion/movement coupled with those vocals and a good message? Also the pianist was one of my favorite parts of the sound.
